Hey look, it’s the first non-Avengery Marvel figure we’ve had in a while! Check out what may be the one figure worth owning from The Amazing Spider-Man after the jump.
The next movie with a Marvel logo on it to hit is the upcoming Marc Webb directed Amazing Spider-Man this July, and the corresponding toy line is starting to hit retail now. While most of the line revealed so far is comprised of cartoonish, under-articulated figures, Ultra-Poseable Spider-Man here stands out as the one possible gem amid a line clearly not targeted at collectors.
The packaging for the line looks kinda cool, but standard fare for a movie line. Picture of the main character, flashy graphics, cross sell on the back peddling uninteresting figures. But this figure’s coolness would only be nullified by leaving him trapped in the bubble. Break him out.
The figure is very well articulated. Ball hinged neck, shoulders, wrists and hips, ball jointed upper torso, double hinged elbows and knees, swivels at the thigh and bicep, and my favorite, rocker ankles! Yeah!
The sculpt of the figure isn’t bad, but because of its small size, some of the detail gets muddied in the paint job. I dig the engraved lines of the suit, but the dark wash applied to bring out those lines is sloppy in places. The paint job on the eyes and a few other places on the costume could have also been a little sharper.
The figure itself seems a little disproportionate to me, though. His neck seems just a little too short, his head seems a little too small, his eyes don't seem symmetrical, and his feet seem just a little too big. It doesn’t seem to match the proportions of the character on screen. And I wish they have given him a “thwipp-y” hand, like he’s shooting a web. Most Spidey figures include this, but it seems weird not to have it on this guy. Also, there are no peg holes in his feet, so stands are out of the question. WTF.
This figure does not include ANY accessories, which I’m willing to deal with in exchange for the “ultra poseable” articulation, but at least a web accessory (like the one that came with 2010’s SDCC movie Spider-Man, shown in a few of these photos) would’ve been nice. And at a $10+ price-point, I’ve gotta say, the lack of accessories in exchange for articulation we usually get at the $8-$9 pricepoint stings a bit.
Overall, this figure is pretty neat. He’s fun to pose and play with, but he is a bit over-priced for what you’re getting (or not getting, as the case may be). He’s certainly the only Spidey figure in the line I have any interest in. I may pick up the Lizard at some point, but overall, I don’t think this line will hold nearly the same buying power as The Avengers does right now. Pick this guy up if you have the cash to drop, but if you don’t, don’t feel like you’re missing out on too much. This is just another in a long, long line of Spider-Man figures.
This is my favorite figure this summer by far! articulation and sculpt are amazing! wish the Avengers line was this articulated. I do dope the 6 inch spidey figures arent walmart exclusives
ReplyDeleteawesome figure, I have the spidey from spider-man 2 and the super-poseable spidey from spider-man 3. BTW, which is that spidey standing next to UP spidey?
ReplyDeleteThat's the San Diego Comic Con exclusive 3.75" movie Spidey from 2010.
ReplyDeleteoh, okay. But they seem to have gotten the "eyes" wrong. Also, do you have the Green Goblin from this line? Because I do, and it's epic. So if you don't, I would really recommend it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the eyes on both these figures are a little less than perfect. They're asymmetrical on the SDCC Spidey, and on this movie Spidey, on my sample at least, they're painted somewhat "off" which makes them look asymmetrical. It's weird. I haven't picked up any of the comic series figures from this line, and probably won't because of the greatly reduced articulation, but I'll give Green Goblin another look next time I see it.
ReplyDeleteDo, the sculpt on the shoulders makes it look as if it's range of movement would be very scarce, however, what little articulation it has has a great range of motion.
ReplyDeleteBased on this review I will be keeping an eye out for this figure. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteG8- My pleasure. And I found one today with his eyes painted correctly, so his face doesn't look so off. Looks much better now.
ReplyDeleteOisin- I haven't picked up Green Goblin yet, but I saw today that he was sculpted by 2dtoys, who's quickly become my favorite sculptor. He also did the Avengers Black Widow and several of my favorite G.I. Joes, so I think I have to get Green Goblin now just for that. He has a photo of his unpainted raw sculpt prototype on his Facebook page and it does look awesome. Thanks for the recommendation on that. I'll pick him up next time I see him.
Yeah, the only problem is the built-in gimick on the glider. fortunately, it's one of those ones that you can ignore
ReplyDeleteI picked Green Goblin up this morning. The sculpt does look really good in person. I have the Marvel Universe Green Goblin, so maybe I'll just give him the glider from that version.
ReplyDeleteWill you be reviewing him? That would be really awesome!^^
ReplyDeleteYep! Might not get to him for a few days, though. I've got a couple others I'm working on first.
ReplyDeleteYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!! He's the best figure of wave 1, wouldn't you agree? Although I also like the Venom figure, despite the kid accessory
ReplyDeleteHe's the only figure from Wave 1 that I've picked up so far, but I do think he looks the best in the packaging. Venom looks good, but I haven't picked him up yet.
ReplyDeleteWell, the fading effect from black to blue is kinda bad. It's more like a sudden stop, also, the accessory is the same one (more or less) that we've been getting for years. Other than that, it's smooth sailing.
ReplyDeleteI bought one tonight at Walmart for $7.47! I don't like the silver soles and the lack of any foot holes for stands but it's a nice figure and for that price I'm quite happy with it.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the Walmart price makes these much easier to swallow.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are SO lucky! Here we still only have wave 1: GG, Venom, Doc Ock, Manga Spiderman, McFarlane Spiderman, Symbiote Spiderman, Scarlet Spider and "House of M" Spiderman. (Or something loosely based on it.)
ReplyDeletecan you review the venom, or the black suit spider man?
ReplyDeleteI haven't picked up Venom or black suit Spidey, and honestly, I probably won't. I already have what I consider to be superior versions of both those figures. If I do decide to pick them up though, I'll definitely review them.
ReplyDeleteWhich venom do you have?
ReplyDeleteI have "Toxic Blast" Venom and "Stretch Strike" Venom, both from the last Spider-Man line.
ReplyDeleteThe figure itself is different from the one showed at the back of the blister :/
